John McNeill VC rescuing Private Vesper. New Zealand Wars Invasion of Waikato 1864
Engraving from Heroes of Britain published circa 1890. McNeill (sometimes spelt M'Neill in Victorian accounts) was with Private Vesper (accounts vary sometimes spelt Vosper) when they were attacked by about fifty natives, Their only chance of escape was riding for their lives but the Private's horse fell and threw him. The natives rushed forward to seize him, but Lieutenant Colonel McNeill, returned, caught his horse, and helped him to mount, and the 2 escaped riding hard. McNeill won the Victoria Cross for this deed of bravery.
