Scanned Fujichrome transparency looking down on Petersfriedhof, also known as Saint Peter’s Cemetery. These buildings are in the old centre of Salzburg, Austria. This is a historic Christian graveyard and catacombs. The adjacent Saint Peter’s Cathedral was established in c700 and is probably on the site of and earlier burial ground. Carved into the rock of the Festungsberg, the mountain within the city of Salzburg, are ancient catacombs including two chapels which may date back to early Christian times. Salzburg has become a victim of its own popularity. In the summer this fascinating city becomes so packed with tourists that its residents avoid their city centre.
