CHARLES FRANKLIN SPRAGUE, Lawyer,was born in Boston, Massachusetts, June10, 185 7, the son of Seth Edward and HarrietBoardman (Lawrence) Sprague. His great-grand-father, the Hon. Seth Sprague, served in the Massa-chusetts Legislature as Representative and Senatorfor about thirty years. His grandfather, the Sprague (Harvard 1812, 1847), wasRepresentative in Congress and United States Sen-ator from Maine, and for twenty-four years held a. CHARLES F. SPRAGUE position on the Federal Bench as United StatesJudge for the District of Massachusetts. His fatherwas a graduate of Harvard in i84r, and held theoffice of clerk of the United States District Courtfrom 1842 to the time of his death in 1869. CharlesF. Sprague received his early education in the pub-lic schools of Boston and was graduated at Harvardin the Class of 1879, subsequently studying law inthe Harvard Law School and at Boston Universityand being admitted to practice as a member of theSuffolk County Bar. He eariy took an interest inpublic affairs, for which he had an aptitude, anc} waselected a member of the Common Council of thecity of Boston in 1889 and 1890.
