The fountain dates back to the ancient Roman times, because the construction of the Aqua Virgo Aqueduct provided water to the Roman baths and the fountains of central Rome. The fountain was built at the end of the aqueduct at the intersection of three roads. These three trebles (streets) give the name of Trevi. In other words, the name would be translated as `Three Streets Fountain`. It kind surprises me every time and I want to keep the tradition of throwing coins over the shoulder, for the legend says a coin thrown into the well will ensure a return to Rome. This tradition is also due to the ancient Romans who often threw coins into the water to make the gods of water favor their journey or to help them return home safely.
