USHUAIA, Argentina — The world's southernmost city sits nestled between the Martial Mountains and the Beagle Channel in Tierra del Fuego. Known as the "End of the World," Ushuaia serves as a major gateway for Antarctic expeditions and tourism. The city's colorful buildings contrast with the snow-capped peaks that form its dramatic backdrop.
Photograph by David Coleman. Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego Province, Argentina, holds the distinction of being the world's southernmost city. Located at approximately 54°48′S latitude, the city sits along the Beagle Channel with the Martial Mountains rising behind it. These mountains, part of the Andes range, create a natural amphitheater around the city, rising to heights of over 4,500 feet (1,370 meters). Originally established as a penal colony in 1884, Ushuaia has evolved into a significant port city and tourist destination. The city serves as the primary departure point for Antarctic expeditions and cruise ships, with its deep-water port remaining ice-free year-round. Ushuaia's development follows the shoreline of the Beagle Channel and climbs into the lower slopes of the mountains, with a current population of approximately 80,000 residents. The city's maritime climate, influenced by its proximity to Antarctica, results in relatively cool temperatures year-round, with average summer highs of 57°F (14°C) and winter temperatures often below freezing.
