It very nearly fits thespandril of the arcade discovered in the south wall ofthe south aisle, and, in order that it may be preserved,I have had it placed there. The treatment of the bodiescoming out of the cofiins is good, and the work is aboutthe date of the 7. A large number of fragments of the groining-ribsof the chancel, of the window tracery, capitals of me-nials, marble shafts from windows, etc. etc., were alsofound. The bulk of all these were built into the upperpart of the chancel walls, and into the gable wall above 128 SOME ACCOUNT OF THE the chancel arch, and were no doubt placed there at thetime of the alterations of the building, after the fire inthe seventeenth century. Of the works recently executed in the church, it willbe sufficient to say, that the nave has been re-seatedwith open seats, and paved with the best red, black, andbuff tiles. The eastern part of the chancel floor hasbeen repaved mth marble and encaustic tiles, and wantof the necessary funds alone has prevented the re-layingof the remainder of the chancel floor and the completionof the seats. The lettern for the Bible is of oak. Thewhole of the chancel has been groined in stone andchalk: the groining-ribs being of Caen stone, and thefil
