Decompression chamber. Control panel of a decompression chamber (upper centre) used to treat divers who have returned to the surface too quickly. Rapid decompression from re-surfacing too quickly causes respiratory gases, dissolved in the blood to leave the blood quickly, forming bubbles that cause decompression sickness (DCS). These bubbles can kill by blocking the blood supply to the brain or heart. Divers are placed in the chamber and the pressure is increased to force the gases to dissolve back into the blood. The pressure is then slowly returned to normal, allowing the gases to slowly leave the blood system.
