CLAMP FOR SAFETY VALVEHYDROSTATIC TESTS 2^ RAILWAY AND LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING October, 1922 valves are screwed down and their springscompressed so that they will not open un-der the excessive pressure to which theyare to be subjected. The result of thistightening is that, after the test, it be-comes necessary to readjust the valves sothat they will open at the proper and de-sired steam pressure. This simple clamp makes it possible toavoid all of this trouble and expense. Itconsists of a voke B which is threaded for ing a leverage of 3j^ to one. This lever-age, combined with 90 lbs. air pressure inthe cylinder, will give an effective pressureon the plunger F of about lbs. Thisthrust is carried by the upwardly project-ing angle block G, which is cast solid withthe base through which the bolt D passes. Twenty-Ton Air Press This air press is intended for forcingbushings in or out of rods and doing any 1^ — 33-—-^. k L_ t^^ 3S- DEVICE FOR PUTTING B.\NDS ON SPRINGS the >^-in. set screw C. At the outer endsof the yoke the two clamping pieces D arepivoted. The lower ends of the clampingpieces are made hook-shaped at A. The set screw C is 3j4 in. long and itspoint is set in the center of the valve stemwhile the hooks of the clamps at the lowerend of D are brought beneath the hp orbeading on the casing of the valve. Then,by turning the set screw down on the valvestem by means of the 3/16 in. steel wire Ethe valve is forced firmly against its seatand held there against any pressure thatmay be applied to the boiler in the courseof a ■ hydrostatic test. The safety valvesprings are not called upon to resist any ofthis pressure, and when it is removed theyare already in adjustment to work underthe boiler pressure to which they had pre-viously been set.
