Mostauthorities have, however, been shy of it on account ofthe dangers above referred to. Graily Hewitt • andThomas are enthusiastic as to their value, whileEmmet, Schroede, Winckel, Hart and Barbour, Goodell, and others, consider them of no use. As there is aninfinite variety of opinions on this subject, and an in-finite variety of pessaries in use, we shall speak hereonly of the most useful forms, and the reader is referred. Fig. 4:j,02.—Posterior Section of Or (Sims.) for further information to the article on Pessaries inVol. V. As anteversion and anteflexion often exist incombination, and as they are-practically the same thingso far as they are affected by a vaginal pessary, verynearly the same pessary may be used for both. The cor-rect principle of these pessaries is to distend the anteriorvaginal cul-de-sac, thereby lifting the fundus uteri anddrawing the cervix forward. The lifting of the con-gested fundus, so as to restore the natural circulation, is 440 UterineDisplacement*. REFERENCE HANDBOOK OF THE MEDICAL SCIENCES.
