Lalibela, Amhara region, Ethiopia. A child prays in one of the Lalibela churches. In the twelfth century, Prince Lalibela built a dozen churches excavated in stone to the north of the present Ethiopian territory. All of them, communicated by subterranean passages that pierce the volcanic rocks of the parched and isolated population that today bears the monarch's name, stand as an unexpected and fabulous miracle of Christianity in this unknown corner of the African continent.
