Eastern State Penitentiary is located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and was operational from 1829 until 1971. It's revolutionary system of incarceration was the first to establish a policy of solitary confinement emphasizing the principles of reform rather than punishment. Notorious criminals such as bank robber Willie Sutton and gangster Al Capone were among the inmates.
