Detail of Battlements, Construction, Colonisation and Pigeon at Historic Bayards Cove Fort with Blue Sky; River Dart, Dartmouth.

Detailed view looking up at the battlements of Bayards Cove fort Dartmouth, Devon. This shows the stone construction of this historic building, particularly the crenellations and subsequent plant colonization. A pigeon sits in one of the loopholes in the fortified wall of this historic waterside fort on the River Dart,. Bayard's Cove fort was built at the narrowest part of the River Dart estuary in 1534 to protect the busy port. At ground level are a series of gun ports with commanding views which can be explored today. There would have been steps to an upper walk way, a view point and location to fire muskets at potential marauders.
