Martin Luther (1483-1546) was a key figure in the Protestant Reformation. He was a German professor of theology, composer, and a monk, In 1505, he became a monk, an Augustinian friar. He was ordained two years later, and in 1510 went to Rome, where he find the corruption very disturbing. This illustration shows Luther as a monk and is based on a woodcut by the German Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach that was done by Cranach in 1521.
