Soldiers embarked on the Northern Pacific were stranded on the Fire Island sand bar near Honelyville, in January 6, 1919. The 2,582 ambulatory wounded soldiers were safely evacuated using various means such as breeches buoy, surf boats, naval launches, and submarine chasers. No casualties were reported.
