Armand Barbes (1809-1870). Illustration of the French Republican revolutionary Armand Barbes. Barbes was a steadfast opponent of the July monarchy (1830-1848) and is best known for his part in the uprising of 12th May 1839, where Republicans tried to overthrow the King Louis Philippe. His actions on this day led to life imprisonment. He is also known for getting caught up in the coup d'etat of 15th May 1848 when demonstrators invaded the Assemblee Nationale.
