In the systems of steamheating which have been described up to this point, the pressurecarried has always been above that of the atmosphere, and the actionof gravity lias been depended upon to carry the water of condensationback to the boiler or receiver; the air in the radiators has been forcedout through air-valves by the pressure of steam back of it. Methodswill now be taken up in which the pressure in the heating system isless than the atmosphere, and wherethe circulation through the radiators isproduced by suction rather than bypressure. Systems of this kind haveseveral advantages over the ordinarymethods of circulation under —no back-pressure is producedat the engines when used in connectionwith exhaust steam; but rather therewill be a reduction of pressure due tothe partial vacuum existing in the radia-tors.
