Active galaxy NGC 1055, optical image. The galaxy is seen edge-on at centre. NGC 1055's disc is seen as a dark band of dust crossing the brighter central bulge. NGC 1055 is an active galaxy that emits radiation from its nucleus, which ionises the gases in it and releases the light that makes it glow. This galaxy lies about 50 million light years from Earth, in the constellation Cetus.
