The Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival 2016 Each year thousands of people gather in the sleepy Dorset village of Tolpuddle to celebrate the memory of the Tolpuddle Martyrs whose lonely struggle for justice for farm workers in the early nineteenth century contributed to the foundation and growth of the modern Trade Union movement. In 2016 The Festival took place against the backdrop of deep division and controversy within the British Labour movement over who should be the leader of the Labour Party. Jeremy Corbyn the incumbent leader was very popular among the more idealistic party members but his authority was challenged by pragmatic political colleagues who regarded him as an obstacle to electoral success with the wider British public.
