Thecartridge containing the detonator (blasting cap or electric fuze). CLEARING THE LAND should be loaded first, so that it will be at the intersection of theholes; then the different holes should be loaded, making sure thatthe first cartridge in each hole touches the primer (the cartridgecontaining the detonator). When the primer is exploded, it willexplode the entire charge. If the above directions are closely adhered to, the general runof stumps can be blown out satisfactorily and cheaply. The stumpsof some kinds of trees, however, require special treatment to get thebest results, and detailed instructions concerning them are given inthe following pages. Southern Pine Stumps The use of explosives in blasting southern pine stumps, espec-ially in very sandy soils, has not been generally recommended inthe past, because the cost has seemed high in comparison with thevalue of the land. The increased value of land and the improve-ments in explosives have, however, now made it entirely feasible toremove these stumps with dynamite. This work can be done withl
