The turbine, governor, and standards for the bearings are all to two strong beams, and are thus made quite rigid. The governing of turbines (and the remark applies also to Pelton wheels)is in many cases more difficult than the governing of steam engines, the two chief difficulties to be overcome being the weight of the movingparts and the fact that if the guides or sluice—or, in the case of a Pelton, the spear-rod—are worked too quickly, a very considerable hydraulic shocktakes place which may do damage to the pipe line. In the Murrayhydraulic governor (fig. ii) the water is, by the action of a high-speedgovernor, turned to one end or the other of an hydraulic cylinder whichworks the guide-blades. Such a governor will be seen in the accompanying THE HYDRAULIC GOVERNOR.
