Stuffed, calf, young specimen of Ethiopian elphant (Loxodonta africana). Zoology Museum of Catania, Sicily, Italy.
Menelik, a small jewel of the negus of the same name, was donated to the Kingdom of Italy by the Empire of Ethiopia after the Treaty of Uccialli on May 2, 1889. King Umberto I, mindful that the symbol of the city of Catania was just an elephant, chose to donate it to the city of Etna, which welcomed him with amazement and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, little Menelik died less than a year later, due to the inadequate condition of the enclosure and poor feed. The remains of the elephant were then embalmed and placed in the hall of the University's Institute of Zoology.
