Canadian grocer April-June 1918 . in-ly to the sale of fruits and spent a good deal of money onthe various changes to the stores, saidMr. Rowntree, and some people mightnot think it a very good time for suchexpenditures, but we are looking towarda bright future, not a dark, and we ex-pect that these expenditures are invest-ments that will show a substantial re-turn. Good Days Ahead In other words the Rowntree firm be-lieves that good times are ahead, andare doing their best to cultivate themnot only in the future, but right addition to the grocery departmentis a case in point. The store was fairlycrowded to be sure, but most merchantswould have figured that this was the timeto leave well enough alone, and wouldhave let it go at that. This firm, how-ever, decided to go ahead and enlargethe premises. There was a vacant sec-tion behind the store proper, openingon the side street, so all that was neededwas to knock out the partition at therear to practically double the availablespace of the An interior fruit display arrangement featured by Rowntree & Sons at the opening of their new fruit department recently. 18 CANADIAN GROCER May 17, L91& A Frail and Vegetable and SpecialtyDepartment Having obtained the necessary extraspace there came the decision to make ita kind of special selling unit, and so itwas decided to make rather more of aspecialty than usual of fruit and vege-tables, and to devote the major part ofthis new space to that use. To call attention to the purpose ofthis department and to afford a methodof advantageously displaying the fruitand vegetable stocks of the store a noveldisplay device was arranged to providethe most unusual display pictured on thispage. The arrangement is simple enough. Arow of bins for the orderly display ofvegetables forms the bottom of the dis-play, neat fixtures yet comparativelyinexpensive. Above these again are other binsbright with a variegated array oforanges and lemons and apples andgrape fruit
