Beyond the station the train crosses the Gotthard-Reuss (p. 137)and enters the great *St. Gotthard Tunnel, constructed in 1872-80at a cost of 563/4 million fr. (2,270,000J.). The tunnel, 28 broadand 21 high, is 16,393 yds. (91/4 M.) in length, being 3114 yds.(l2/3 M.) longer than the Mont Cenis Tunnel. The central point is3786 above the sea-level, from which it descends on both sides,about 6 in 1000 towards Goschenen, and 2 in 1000 towards air in the interior is fresh and free from smoke; the temperatureis about 70° Fahr.
