Angelus Van Paemel, whomBishop Lefevere had sent to Baraga that 242 HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE OF he might learn Otchipwe, took care of themission. Returning from Cincinnati,Baraga visited his out-lying missionsduring August and September and thenleaving for Europe he again entrustedLAnse with the missions to Father VanPaemel. While on his way Baraga wasinformed in Detroit that he was madeVicar Apostolic of Upper his consecration at Cincinnati he Bishop Baraga charge. on assummg activeof his vicarate was anxiousto provide his own clergy for the first-ordained he sent to Eagle Har-bor where among the mines and minershis presence was a crying need. OnAugust 5, 1855, he ordained EdwardJacker and immediately sent him toLAnse. The first baptism recorded byhim is on the 5th of September, of Wil-liam Nanaassin. Notknowing any OtchipweFather Jacker gave him-self utmost pains to ac-quire that most dif^cultlanguage. With the helpof Bishop Baragas Gram-mar and Dictionary hesoon picked up enough ofit to make himself under-stood.
