Ozone pollution research. Trees inside a FACE (Free-Air CO2/O3 Enrichment) ring for studying the effects of ozone (O3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) pollution on plants. O3 and/or CO2 are pumped into the air from the top of vertical pipes (white). These trees have been damaged by ozone from the FACE pipes. Ozone is a pollutant gas formed by chemical reactions between oxygen and pollutants in the lower atmosphere. The levels of ozone are expected to rise with increased industrialisation and temperature changes. Carbon dioxide increases plant growth, but ozone reduces it. The FACE site, started in 1989, is in Wisconsin, USA.
