It was mustered in at Davenport in theautumn of 1863, with Philip H. Goode as captain, and Lieuts. Beat-ty, McClellan, Alexander, Ellsworth and Brown. It remained withGen. Sully in the West till Feb. 22, 1864, when it arrived in NewOrleans. It formed part of the guard of the city during the ab-sence of Banks army in the Red river campaign and afterwardmarched to Thibodeaux, where it remained until mustered out July14, 1865. Crawford, third governor of Kansasafter its admission into the Union and editor of the chapter on^Military AflFairs in Kansas, was born in Lawrence county, Ind.,April 10, 1835, and there spent his boyhood on the farm. Whileattending the Bedford academy he took up the study of lawand in 1856 graduated in the Cincinnati law school. Two yearslater he located at Garnett, Kan., and began the practice of hisprofession. He was a member of the first state legislature,which met in March, 1861, and though only 26 years of age hesoon demonstrated his ability to represent the district from•which he was elected.
