Dredging machine, 16th-century artwork. The toothed dredge is at left, and a system of pulleys and winches on the bank (right) and on a raised platform (centre), are being used to drag the dredge across an area that is being cleared of rocks through a gate (centre right). This is figure 21 from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The Latin title of the book was 'Theatrum instrumentorum et machinarum' (Theatre of machines and instruments). It was originally published in around 1572. This engraving is from the 1582 edition, published in Lyon by the publisher Barthelemy Vincent.
