Anaemia, conceptual computer artwork. Two of the erythrocytes (red blood cells) have lost their colour, representing anaemia. Anaemia is a condition in which the blood has a reduced capacity to transport oxygen to the body's tissues. It is usually caused by a low concentration of haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying molecule inside red blood cells. Haemoglobin cannot be made without iron, so an iron deficiency in the diet is the most common cause of anaemia.
