When quite young he was self-indenturedto a trade, and soon earned sufficient means to sup-port himself. Having acquired a good preparatoryeducation in the public schools, he entered Averycollege and completed the class-ical course at that institution. Hestudied theology at the Westerntheological seminary, Alleghanycity. Pa. During a brief itin-erant career he was assigned toleading charges, including Bethelchurch, Baltimore. In 1867 hewrote and published An Apol-ogy for African Methodism, awork showing diligent researchregarding the aim and purpose ofthe African Methodist polity. Onaccount of its incisive statementand literary merit this book gainedfor its author wide recognitionfor scholarship.
