The tunnel is 407 meters long and has been restored so it is accessible by foot, cycle or wheelchair and well light throughout. The tunnel was previously part of a main railway line, the walls are blackened with a thick crust of soot from engine exhaust, while a strip in the roof is blasted clean by that same exhaust. The tunnel is stone-lined throughout and on a curved and falling 1:50 gradient. The tunnel is part of a 13-mile route and was restored by Sustrans in partnership with Bath and North East Somerset Council. The opening of the route was attended by hundreds of cyclists and pedestrians to celebrate the new access to beautiful Somerset country-side.
