Clarence Chamberlin and Ruth Nichols, 1930

Clarence Chamberlin and Ruth Nichols (in cabin), arrived in Washington today with the new Chamberlain cabin menoplane. They are pointing out the many features of this new plane to Commander Douglas, Commandant of the Naval Air Station and Commander Towers, Assistant Chief of the Naval Bureau of Aeronautics (right). Clarence Duncan Chamberlin (November 11, 1893 - October 31, 1976) was an American pioneer of aviation, being the second man to pilot a fixed-wing aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean, from New York to the European mainland, while carrying the first transatlantic passenger. Ruth Rowland Nichols AKA the Flying Debutante (February 23, 1901 - September 25, 1960) was an American aviation pioneer. During the 1930s Nichols made several record-setting flights and was the only woman yet to hold simultaneous world records for speed, altitude, and distance for a female pilot.
