Clump of the whipworm Trichuris trichiura taken from the human caecum, a blind-ended pouch at the junction of the small and large intestines. Both male and female worms are present. An infestation of the large intestine by these worms is called trichuriasis. The disease produces few symptoms unless the infestation is particularly heavy. In the latter case symptoms include diarrhoea, anaemia, weakness & abdominal pain. The worms are contracted through food contaminated by the worm's eggs. The larvae develop in the large intestines and the adults move into the colon.
