Pancake ice stranded on a beach at low tide. This type of sea ice is normally found free-floating and develops on the surface of very cold open seawater covered with surface slush (frazil ice). These pancake ice polygons have been stranded during low tide and still retain their original pattern. A small tidal channel can be seen running between them.
