Scanning electron microscopy. Researcher operating a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Scanning electron microscopes use electrons to view objects at magnifications much higher than can be obtained using light waves. This is the first electron microscope used by the Safety in Mines Research Establishment (SMRE), one of the forerunners of what is today the UK's Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Photographed in the 1950s.
