When pus is present in the antrum of Highmore the passage of therays is so obstructed that all these phenomena are diminished or abro-gated. This transillumination test renders more service if only the USE OF ELECTRIC CURRENT FOR DIAGNOSIS 345 sinus on one side is suspected, when positive results are easily contrastedwith the opposite side, and would lend strong confirmatory the other hand a negative result would tend to indicate that thepus seen in the middle meatus came not from the maxillary, but fromthe frontal sinus.
