Relief. Chariot race in the Circus Maximus, Rome, 3rd c. AD. Left side; closer view showing the imperial enclosure (pulvinar) with the emperor holding what appears to be the mappa in his right hand. One of the nobles in the enclosure extends a hand toward the victorious charioteer. On the side of the pulvinar are two statues of deities watching the race, Victoria and one of the Dioscuri. Rome, Vatican Museum (Chiaramonti).
