After he had been at home a year, Franklin suggestedthat another attempt should be made to survey thenorthern coast while Parry was at work in search of theNorth-West Passage. The suggestion was by Richardson and Back, and by E. as assistant surveyor—who had been out with. FRANKLINS SECOND LAND JOURNEY 157 Captain Lyon in the same capacity—and by ThomasDrummond as assistant naturalist, he left Liverpool onthe 26th of February, 1825. Taught by experience, the expedition was bettermanaged in every way. Instead of driving aheadregardless of the season or the trade routine, theordinary conditions of local travel were kept in viewthroughout, and the results were more in proportionto the effort. Three boats were specially built atWoolwich on Franklins design and under Buchanssuperintendence. They were of mahogany with timbersof ash, both ends alike, steerable by oar or rudder, thelargest 26 ft. by 5 ft. 4 ins., the two others 24 ft. by4 ft. 10 ins., and with them Colonel Pasleys portableboat, known as the Walnut Shell from its shape, 9 and half as wide, with frames of ash fastened withthongs and covered with canvas.
