The people of Antwerop always had a special relationship with the river Scheldt (De Schelde) that runs as a lifeline through the western part of Belgium. It is thanks to its location near the river that Antwerp has become a metroplis with an international seaport. Former mayor Lode Craeybeclx famously once said that if you live in Antwerp you only have to dip your hand into the river to connect with the rest of the world.
