Maceration consists inpouring the liquid upon the medicinal substance previouslybruised or coarsely powdered, and allowing it to stand for a greateror less period of time, according to circumstances. The longest period directed in the Pharmaco-poeia for infusions is twenty-fourhours, as in the case of infusionof wild cherry; the shortest, tenminutes, as in the case of infusionof chamomile. In preparing tinc-tures, wines, vinegars, &c, seven orfourteen days are generally pre-scribed. Infusions are best prepared in avessel made for the purpose, figuredin the drawing, called Alsops Infu-sion Mug, which contains a perfo-rated diaphragm b, near the top, onwhich the substance to be maceratedis placed, and the liquid introducedso as barely to cover this, reaching, perhaps, to the line e ; a circulationis thus induced and continued inSection of Alsops infusion mug. the liquid by which the least im-. Squires Infusion Pot is an improvement on Alsops; it is a veryneat pharmaceutical implement adapted to making the galenicalliquid preparations generally. In Fig. 103, we have a section, B andD, being two cup-shaped perforated diaphragms, either of which may Fig. 103.
