Naworth Castle, the baronial mansion of the barony of Gilsland, seated amidst loftytrees, in a verdant park, on the south side of the Irthing, is distant two miles and a half,east by north, from Brampton. This unique specimen of feudal architecture consists of two lofty towers, connectedby masses of masonry, enclosing a quadrangular court; and retains the character whichdistinguished it when occupied by Lord William Howard, celebrated in the Lay of theLast Minstrel, as Belted Will.
