Features of the head visible are the two segemented antennae (top, left & right), both compound eyes and the mandibles (mouthparts). The head is covered in fine hairs (hence the name \velvety\"). The velvety tree ant is common in California and the western states of , living in cracks in tree bark. The ant feeds on other insects and honeydew.
