Annual report of the Bureau of Statistics and Information of Maryland. o make clear to the readerthe actuality of this sort of effort to defeat the purpose of thelaw and the need of exacting adequate proofs of ages if theStates children are to receive the protection intended by thelaw. The exhibits are submitted in pairs, one showing thealtered birth record and the other the coiTect record securedby the Bureau direct from the church registry, attendingphysician or health department. Plate I-a, for example, is areproduction of the original baptismal certificate whereonthe date of birth has been rendered more or less obscure bythe attempt at alteration. The parent presented the certifi-cate, explaining that the year of birth was 1903, and thedate on the certificate, though obscure, appears so to be. Anappeal to the priest, however, brought a copy of the baptismalrecord, which is reproduced in Plate I-b, and which shows theyear of birth to be 1905.
