The Chateau Frontenac hotel was built by Canadian National Railways in the 19th century as part of a chain of hotels across Canada in grand, sumptous style to welcome guests from across the vast country. The statue of Samuel de Champlain, the Frencg explorer, turns its back to the St. Lawrence river and towards the kingdom of "New France" where he was to work to attract new settlers
