Textbook of normal histology: including an account of the development of the tissues and of the organs . ipolar, and have, according to recent investigations, -,05 NORMAL HISTOLOGY. branched protoplasmic as well as nervous or axis-cylinderprocesses ; while the former ramify among the cells of the granulelayer, the delicate nervous processes extend into the outer, molecular layer, where they usually end by dividing into longitu-dinal T-branches which stretch horizontally parallel with the boun-daries of the zone. The processes of these cells are so delicate, aswell as so masked by the surrounding elements, that their existencehas been established only after the introduction of the recent methodsof Golgi, the results of whose investigations have been confirmed byRamon y Cajal, Kblliker, and others. Other nervous elements ofthe granule layer are the sparingly-distributed multipolar cells, much larger than the ones just considered, which resemble in struct-ure and size the cells of Purkinje, and, like them, possess richly-branched protoplasmic processes extending within the molecular Fig. Diagram representing cellular constituents of cerebellar cortex ; Golgis silver staining : IV, whitematter ; O, G, outer and granule layers of gray matter; a, large cell of granule layer confined to graysubstance; b, 6, small nerve-cells of granule layer (exaggerated for convenience), also limited to graymatter; c, cell of Purkinje. sending axis-cylinder into granule layer and richly-branched processestowards periphery ; e, similar cell seen in profile ; f, small nerve-cell of outer layer, limited to graymatter ; g, nerve-cell of outer layer, whose axis-cylinder process forms basket works (d, d) aroundbody of cells of Purkinje; at inner border of outer zone numerous horizontally ramifying branchesof nerve-fibres are seen. layer ; they differ in the distribution and form of the axis-cylinderprocesses. The latter are directed towards the medulla, but, insteadof passing into the granu
