The life of was a quiet and uneventful one, barring the happenings incidentto the formative period of the covmty, and he died on April 18. 1880, hiswddow surviving him until 1896. William M. Smith was the oldest of his parents children and muchof the hard work in the carrying on of the regular farm work early fellupon his shoulders. He attended the country school in the winterseasons, and remained in the home until he had passed his twenty-firstbirthday. Hesecured work in a stave factory at which he continued for a time, butlater went into the teaming ])usiness, still later engaging in the feedbusiness. Subsequent to his experience in that respect he once more tookup teaming, and for a considerable time after that was in the employ ofvarious grocery concerns in the city. In August, 1902, he bought alease and the building which stands on his present property, and atonce opened up a general coal and fuel business. In 1911 he built hispresent building, and it is needless to add, he has prospered most agree-ably in the business. He has added cement to his stock, and cementblocks, in which he is now extensively and profitably engaged in manu-facturing. He handles more than one hundred
