The edifice was styled a meetinghouse because it was used for general purposes. Inthe first years of the settlements of New England themeeting house was some times fortified and used as aplace of refuge. Many of the families of the first settlerswere in this way saved from massacre by the Indians. Often the meeting house in New England wasbuilt on a hill top and the guard in the turret, sweepingthe entire region round about with his eye, couldreadily espy the approach of an enemy. In such aspot the meeting house was comparatively safe fromdestruction by fire and easily defended from attack bythe enemy. Its sides were conspicuous places for theposting of notices, and hides of wild beasts weresometimes nailed to the meeting house to dry. Wemust not think that our forefathers were prone toidolatry because they sought out the high places of theland as sites for their religious altars. Rev. John W. Har
