Soldiers, wearing hazmat suits, begin the task of taking the dead and sick from the barracks after the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The camp's position in the west of Germany meant that thousands of people were sent there as the east fell. 18000 people died in March 1945 alone, and 10000 died in the two weeks after liberation. They died of disease and neglect rather than the systematic abuse seen elsewhere.
