WAIiES, Salem Howe, journalist, was bornin Wales, Mass., Oct. 4, 1835. He is descendedfrom one of the Puritan fathers who came to thiscountry with Richard Mather in1631. He was educated at the com-mon schools of his native town, andat the Academy of Attica, N. 1846 he came to New York,and for about two years was em-ployed in an importing house.
