In 1858 he was electedCounty Judge, an office for which his education and extensive acquaint-ance with all branches of the law rendered him peculiarly fitted. Hisdecisions were always rendered in the plainest language and were sel-dom reversed by the higher courts. In social life he was dignified andpossessed a full share of that family pride which is so characteristic ofthe descendants of his illustrious ancestor. Judge Smith married Sarah N. Clinch.
