'November', The Poetry Path. Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, England, United Kingdom, Europe.
The Poetry Path is a celebration of the hill farmer's ancient and enduring relationship with the stunning landscape in and around Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria's upper Eden valley. Twelve short poems were written by local poet, Meg Peacocke, which were then carved by lettering artist Pip Hall into blocks of stone incorporated into walls and stiles, or positioned as milestones and installed at intervals along a circular route on eithr side of the River Eden. Carve decorative motifs with each poem depict some of the activities associated with each month of the hill farmer's year from January to December. The poem for November is engraved on two standing stones and reads as follows:- " THROUGH HAZELS AND ALDERS, SOFTLY OR IN SPATE, EDEN MOVES IN THE VALLEY IT HAS HOLLOWED FROM MALLERSTANG TO THE SHIFTING SOLWAY SANDS. LONG MAY THE DIPPER BE REGENT HERE, PIPING THE FULL REACH OF HIS GROUND; THE ONLY MONARCH, KINGFISHER, TURQUOISE JEWEL, ARROWY AT DUSK".
